Camp 97 Honors UGA ROTC CadetsEach year the Brig Gen T.R.R. Cobb camp honors a University of Georgia Army and Air Force ROTC Cadet with the SCV HL Hunley Award which is given to an outstanding student. The cadets are nominated by their commanding officer(s).
On April 20th at the Seney-Stovall Chapel at the University of Georgia, Commander Tommy Hewell Lt Commander Curt Collier presented University of Georgia Army ROTC Brennan Mancil with the Sons of Confederate Veterans HL Hunley Award. On April 25th at the Zell B. Miller Learning Center at the University of Georgia, Commander Tommy Hewell and Lt Commander Curt Collier presented University of Georgia Air Force ROTC Cadet Andrew E. Mogan with the Sons of Confederate Veterans HL Hunley Award. |
2017 Confederate Memorial Service - April 30
Members, friends, and guests gathered at the Wingfield Chapel of Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens for this year's Confederate Memorial Service. The service began with welcomes from Commander Tommy Hewell, an invocation from Past Commander George Smith, a salute to the flag by Lt Commander Curt Collier, followed by the introduction of our guest speaker Mr. Bob Collins by Past Commander and Memorial Chairman Clark Williams.
Mr. Collins gave a fiery speech on the "Sacrifice" that the men in Grey gave during the war. He detailed the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse where nearly 32,000 Americans were KIA, WIA, or MIA. He made parallels between Spotsylvania Courthouse and the 1950 Korean battle known as the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.
Members of the 18th GA Infantry Co C and Camp 96 Honor Guard gave a musket salute and Alexander Boskoff played "Taps" as the service concluded.

2016 Confederate Memorial Service - May 1
Members, friends, and guests gathered at the Wingfield Chapel of Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens for this year's Confederate Memorial Service. The rain did not hinder those in attendance their passion to honor our Confederate Heroes. The service began with welcomes from Commander Tommy Hewell, an invocation from Chaplain Clark Ivey, a salute to the flag by Adjutant Tommy McCullers, followed by the introduction of our guest speaker Ms. Teresa Roane by Lt. Commander Curt Collier.
Ms. Roane presented several first hand accounts from soldiers, officers, and women who struggled to fight for Southern Independence. Their importance is why we cannot and should not "leave our ancestors at the door."

2016 Memorial Week - April 24 - May 1
During the weekend of April 23rd and 24th, members from the camp placed flags on the graves of the Confederate Veterans in Barrow, Clarke, Jackson, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Walton counties. The camp puts out over 800 flags for memorial week annually. The following is a list of the flagged cemeteries (order by cemetery name).

"History on the Lawn" - Oconee Historical Society
On Sunday, April 17th, 2016 the Brig. Gen. TRR Cobb Camp #97 Sons of Confederate Veterans participated in the "History on the Lawn" which was sponsored by the Oconee Historical Society at Ashford Manor in Watkinsville. This involved groups from around Oconee County who were trying to promote the importance of learning about and preserving the history of the county. Commander Tommy Hewell was able to participate briefly but Past Commander John Webb, Past Commander Bill Rockwell and member Shelby Chasteen spent the entire day welcoming visitors to the table filled with brochures and other SCV materials. Bill and Shelby were dressed in full uniform with muskets and Shelby had set up his small encampment displaying replicas of Confederate soldier gear.
